Setting up your Wheelchair

Instructional Videos

When you receive notification that your wheelchair has been shipped, we recommend you purchase these seatbelt covers for the leg rings on the wheelchair.
We suggest a set of four for rear wheelchairs. This will give you a set, and a spare if you need to wash them. The 9.9 inch size should work for most wheelchairs.

The quad (four wheel) wheelchairs have two sets of leg rings, so you may want eight seatbelt covers with spare set.

After the wheelchair is set up and you get your dog in it, please check the following:

  • Check if the black knob in back is right on hip, as shown on alignment photo.

  • Be sure side rail is just behind shoulder, and straight from front to back. Adjustment up or down of front of side rail is made by adjusting harness.

  • On medium and large wheelchairs tilt the wheels back as seen in photo. One to two inches should work.

  • Once you’ve done this, please send photos in your Facebook Messenger chat line so we can check the adjustments.

Set up complete - Now what?

Now that your dog’s wheelchair is all set up and properly adjusted, it’s time to roll!
A few things to know: every dog is different. Some dogs are slower to walk in their wheelchairs, some take off running!

Here’s a few tips for getting started.

  • Start slow. Five-ten minutes a day several times a day. See how your dog handles the exercise. Remember, they have not been able to to exercise much, So they need to build up their strength.

  • Do not leave your dog unattended in their wheelchair.

  • Using wheelchair inside for mealtime with elevated food bowl can be helpful.

  • Get out in front of your dog and encourage them to come to you. Treats or toys can help.

  • Be consistent and keep trying.

  • It may help to attach a leash to the wheelchair as seen in this photo.

Tips to Adjust to Chair

Advice to help your dog adjust to a wheelchair

At Tysons we have seen how differently dogs adapt to using a wheelchair. Some pups, often those with a resilient and playful spirit, seem to take to their new wheels almost immediately. They might wobble a bit at first, but their natural drive to explore and engage often kicks in quickly, and before you know it, they're zipping around like they always have. Others, however, may need more time and patience. They might be more cautious, perhaps feeling unsteady or confused by the change in their mobility. Building their confidence through positive reinforcement, short and encouraging practice sessions, and plenty of love and support is key to helping these dogs eventually embrace their wheelchairs and regain their independence.

Skull Duggery

I always suggest people put the chair together and set it near where the dog spends the day. Don't try to put the dog into the chair immediately, give them time to get used to the look and smell of the chair. The most common issue I see with the set-up is the chair is not level to the ground (the harness is pointing the support arms up or down). Know when the right time to start using stirrups or wheels for hind feet. Do not get frustrated, it takes time and trial and error to get the chair dialed in correctly.

My Zorro took to it right away he missed his walks but I also have other dogs that would walk with him . I truly believe that another dog will help distract them with good memories you shouldn't have any issues after the first time if walking with another furry friend.

Bandit fought me at first, and just stood and looked at me I realised she wasn't comfortable In the harness.we searched for a clip on body harness that we attached to the chair. Also, let them do something they really like, for her, being a terrier, it's searching for prey. So we put her in the wheels, then egg her on to "search" pointing to cupboard, behind the fridge, etc. She also loves barking at passers-by lol, so as soon as she is In the wheels, she goes and Waits by the door, to go out front. I can say be patient, lots of treats and loving on them. Then she also tends to explore and enjoy the wheels more when she is In a New environment

Our dog took to hers very well other than when she wanted to do zoomies and would flip over. Or when she would run full speed into her crate and wreck into the entrance because she wouldn't fit. She no longer wears them in the house only outdoors for her walks. It's what works best for us.

Colleen McKain - Brutus

Brutus took to being in it with no problem but moving was a different story. Food is definitely a motivation for any pug and he didn't disappoint! We use cheerios as to not gain weight. Even if I have to walk backwards so he sees there's a reward for catching up to me. His sister Tink goes on walks with us as an encouragement to keep up with her. Even if he doesn't go far or sometimes just stands, it gets him upright n from his consistent laying position. His our one eyed wonder pirate pug!
